Parish Newsletter For All Saints Church Grayswood - June 2002

Dear Friends,

The Kempe stained-glass window is back in place at the west end of the church building and is looking splendid.   In fact it probably looks much as it did when it was first installed.  So our first Centenary project is a great success and we look forward to seeing the results of the second one; the restoration of the murals by Carl Almquist.  When Painting Conservator Philip Young has completed his work on these, they too will look much as they did when they were originally painted.

Both the Kempe window and the Almquist murals are nearly as old as our church building itself — and restoring them to their original beauty is an appropriate way of marking the 100th anniversary of All Saints Parish Church.  But, as we reach the half-way point in this Centenary year, it is important to celebrate the present and the future as well as the past.  And that is what we will be doing at the end of this month, during our special Centenary Celebration Weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, 29th and 30th June, there will be an Exhibition depicting 100 years of Grayswood history.  Many local residents have contributed to this collection, providing fascinating glimpses of village life through the 20th Century.

To complement the exhibition (which takes place in the Village Hall), we have produced a guide to the church building, describing its many unique and beautiful features.  If you visit All Saints on Saturday, 29th June, you will be treated to a day-long Organ Recital, and you will be able to admire the works of art created for our three-day Flower Festival (29th June - 1st July).

The highlight of the weekend will be our open-air ‘Songs of Praise’ service on the Village Green, at 10.00 (for 10.30) on Sunday morning, 30th June.  Helping to lead the service will be the Reverend Norman Jones, Rector of Haslemere, All Saints’ choir and our organist, Jean White, other local residents, and music and drama groups made up of members of several local churches.  We hope that the whole village will join us for this service — and for a barbecue lunch afterwards.

Our church building has been an important part of Grayswood Village for a hundred years — but All Saints Church is much more than a building, it is people.  As we celebrate the past, the present and the future, come and rejoice with us.

Yours faithfully,

Rev Kate Atkinson, Parish Priest
